BATH SCHOOLS PAY THE PENALTY
BY SAM MOUNT

from the Bath Chronicle 11:00 - 04 November 2003

For the second weekend in a row, Bath Schools' Under 11 travelled across to Newbury for a Witney Cup match. The week previously, Bath were beaten in the Southern Counties Cup by just a single goal and this week we had something to prove.

Although we made a quiet start, with much of the game being played in our half, the Bath defence of Lewington, Jefferies, Rosser and Mount stood firm and shut the Newbury attack out.

With 10 minutes played, the referee awarded a dubious penalty to Newbury with both sets of players and fans left standing in confusion.

The Newbury captain stepped up and smashed the ball into the bottom corner of the net.

We then stepped up our game, increasing the pressure on the Newbury defence with Joe Symonds (Southdown) and Erny Peibst (Corsham Primary) both just missing out.

Our dominance continued with Sam Mount's shot being blocked and Tom Lewington's (St Michael's) effort flying just over the crossbar.

With Bath pushing forward for an equaliser, space was opening up for Newbury to double their lead but they were kept at bay with another outstanding performance by Sam Butler (St Phillip's).

With just 10 minutes to go Lewis Hunt (WASPS) had a fine shot parried by the Newbury goalkeeper. Two more efforts from Bath went close but the referee blew the final whistle and we went down 1-0.

After having so much possession and so many chances, the team were extremely disappointed to have lost.

Now on to the league!

The Bath Chronicle-sponsored Bath Primary Schools' FA will play their first reserve fixture on Saturday against Swindon at the University (1pm).
