Bath win Cotswold Title

Bath were crowned champions on Saturday as they finished first and third in the annual Cotswold league 6-a-side tournament in Swenson.

Last year’s runners up and this year’s national finalists, Bath were considered to be the favourites for the title.  The A team eventually clinched the title after beating Swindon 2-1 in the final game and the B team was denied the runner’s up spot after being held to a 1-1 draw in their final game also against Swindon.

More honours were presented to Bath when young midfielder Bradley Norris ( Oldfield Park ) was awarded with the Most Valuable Player of the tournament trophy.

Coach Tim Kirk, ?The schools and clubs of Bath are very fortunate to have such a determined and talented group of footballers represent them.  They have impressed all who have watched them this year and there is still more to come.  We will wind down now and give the boys a well earned rest before preparing in earnest for the national final in June.  Just like Chelsea , we’re going for the treble now! ?

Bath V West Wiltshire  2-0                   Oswin, Norris

Bath got their campaign off to an extraordinary start when after just two minutes a powerful goal kick from the Wiltshire keeper was headed straight back into his goal by Will Oswin (Newbridge) from 20 yards.  Bath continued to push forward and it was no surprise when Bradley Norris (Oldfield Park) added a second from a corner.  The score could have been higher but for some narrow misses from Grappy up front and Norris in midfield.

Bath V Vale of White Horse     2-0                   Rowlands, Norris

Bath once again began the game in a determined fashion and immediately pressured the Vale defence.  A good passing move resulted in Jack Rowlands tucking the ball away neatly past the stranded keeper.  Bath then sealed the game with a second goal for Bradley Norris.  In both periods, Rowlands and Smithies maintained their efforts in defence and limited the Vale to few chances.

Bath V Gloucester                    3-1                   Norris, Grappy, Oswin

In a jubilant mood already, Bath were stunned to find themselves one-nil down after 30 seconds.  A poor clearance in front of goal gave the Gloucester forward the opportunity to slip the ball between keeper Joseph Davies’ legs.  However, Bath responded well and opened their account with a goal from Grappy.  Oswin then fired home direct from a corner and Norris fired another from 20 yards to give Bath a comfortable victory.

Bath V South Gloucestershire               0-2

The young Bath side were brought quickly back down to earth with a narrow 2-0 loss in  their next game.  Again the boys made a slow start and when the midfield failed to track back on two occasions, South Gloucestershire punished them on both counts.  To Bath’s credit, they then took hold of the game and created numerous chances but the ball failed to find its way into the opposition’s net.  The best chance came when Norris struck a fantastic shot from the half way line only to see it career off the crossbar.

Bath V Bristol                                       0-2

Bath’s second defeat in two games then gave other teams hope of challenging for the title.  Firstly, a defensive error allowed a goal kick to bounce in front of the Bath area and the ball amazingly found its way into the back of the Bath net.  A more determined Bristol side then scored another and Bath could not respond and failed to trouble the Bristol keeper.

Bath V Swindon                                   2-1                   Oswin, Oswin

Needing a victory to clinch the title, Bath forgot the misfortunes of the previous two games and took the game to Swindon from the onset.  Norris once again hit the crossbar, and the Swindon keeper saved well from Grappy and Oswin.  It was Oswin who then broke the deadlock after he was put clear on the left by a perfectly weighted pass by Rowlands.  Although Bath continued to create chances and look the better side, Swindon then drew level from close range.  As the game drew to a close, the Bath attack became more desperate and Swindon defended well trying to clear the ball away from their goal area.  With just 10 seconds to go, Oswin was once again released on the left and he finished to the right of the Swindon keeper to the cheers of the Bath travelling contingent.  Bath had won their second title of the year.
