Chandag Kings of the 6-a-Side

by Kevin Smithies (Chandag Team Manager) 18/10/04

Chandag Junior School won the BANES 6-a-Side competition on Saturday, 16th Oct 2004 winning the Final against a strong Paragon side 1-0.

From the first match against King Edwards School, the team played some nice football and showed they intended to do well in the competition. Goals were hard to come by however and with only five minutes each way, it was important to take chances when they came.

We played five matches in the league stages, winning 3, drawing 1 and losing to WASPS 2-1. We gained enough points to qualify for the knockout stages and with the large pitches and tough conditions, needed all 10 players to contribute.

Our semi final was against St Stephens - who we knew had two district side players and would be tough. We had a fright when a shot from their side was only half saved by keeper Jo Mason, but Sam Clarke was there to clear it off the line - despite protestations from the opposition that it was already over. Then Ryan Moore scored what had to be the goal of the competition with a rasping shot from about 15 yards out. We then had some defending to do but managed to cling on.

The final was against Paragon who had beaten Newbridge 1-0 in their semi. We had already met them in the league and drew 0-0 so we knew we had a tough game ahead of us. The game was played at a high tempo, despite the weary legs of all involved. Chandag got the breakthrough with a good build up involving Sam Sarre and a great finish from Jack Neil to beat a very capable goalkeeper. We then managed to continue to dominate the game and restrict Paragons chances with some great defensive work from Sam Clarke.

The boys deserved to win by playing some excellent football and can look forward to a great season ahead of them.

The full winning squad were:

Joseph Mason
Samuel Clarke
Anthony Sandison
Jack Neil
Samuel Sarre
Ryan Moore
Kenny Watts
Michael Woods
Andrew Minchin
Karl Harrison

I haven't been in charge of the boys long enough to take any credit for the way they played but can see that there is a lot of quality in this side and they should achieve a lot of success. The player who stood out most for me was Sam Clarke, who constantly mopped up any signs of danger at the back and completely surpassed my expectations of him. All the boys deserve credit though and you can see by the photo above, that they enjoyed themselves.
