The university, along with the biting
cold rain, held Saturday's match between Bath and Plymouth.
The bad weather was not ideal for the under 11's but we put up
with it. Good link up play between Sam Clarke and Will Oswin
on the right flank and between Harry Daniels (St Stephen's)
and Jack Neil (Chandag) on the left resulted in lots of early
chances for the Bath strikers Paris Grappy (WASPS) and Alex
Jacobs (St Mary's). However, despite the pressure, they were
unable to put the ball in the back of the net.
The first goal came from Grappy,
which finally broke the deadlock for Bath. With the ball
bouncing round in the Plymouth penalty area, Grappy managed to
squeeze a shot in from 10 yards through a cluster of
defenders. The first and only good chance for Plymouth came
from their mid-fielder when he attempted to chip the keeper
but the Bath goalie Sam Butler denied Plymouth a goal with a
fantastic finger save allowing defender Charlie Wills to
clear.
At half time the players frantically
tried to keep warm but they were soon back on just as cold if
not colder. Plymouth came back a lot more determined and
started playing good football in Bath's half. Even though
midfielder Hedges and a full back Jamie Smithies were missing
for Bath, defenders including Charlie Wills, Milo Mc.Nulty
(both The Paragon) and Sam Clarke (Chandag) managed to prevent
Plymouth from getting towards the Bath goal. They also managed
to feed mid-fielder Jack Rowlands who laid some great balls on
for winger, Will Oswin who caused plenty of problems for
Plymouth defence. When Oswin scored his second, the whole team
gained more confidence and it resulted in Bath's third goal
from nine-year-old Kristian Scott from Kingswood.
Excellent passing and movement from
Plymouth gave them their first goal but it was quickly
followed up by a Bath goal from Will Oswin who completed his
hatrick and his seventh goal in two matches. This didn't worry
Plymouth as they responded with a goal from their striker. The
match ended with another win for Bath, the score being 5-2.
Charlie Wills picked up Man of the match- a wise decision from
Tim Kirk, the Bath schools' coach.
"I am delighted with the team's
performance, it's certainly the best they have played yet.
They kept the ball under pressure and were very direct going
forward. Once again Charlie Wills and Jack Rowlands showed a
lot of maturity on the ball hardly ever giving away
possession, and Grappy and Jacobs worked really hard up front
on and off the ball. Bearing in mind the cold conditions we
could not have asked for more." Coach, Tim Kirk.
